1. What ways does your product....?
Use:
My products uses quite a few of the conventions of indie / rock magazines. Starting with the front cover, I have put a picture that takes up a lot of the page and put it off centre, to the right, so that text can be put down the left hand side I also have in the image the 'artists' looking at the camera. Like most magazines, the writing is in a simple font, it’s bold, and sticks out. It’s also along the left hand side which is called the 'sweet spot' and is usually the first place you look which is why there is usually a lot of text there. Like most magazines the font is large to grab the reader’s attention. I have put a banner above the title, talking about an upcoming gig. My contents page has quite a simple layout, a couple of pictures showing what’s in the article and a list format with the page numbers down the right hand side. The date and issue number are both next to the title. For my double page spread I have got a big picture across two pages, this is a lot more in comparison to the amount of writing. I have got the title 'NEW FOUND TALENT' in big writing, then the 'A band, me and my team....' is a bit smaller and the main part of the article in even smaller writing (24pt)
The artists in my magazine are quite new or young. This is to show that young people can make it in the music industry, and it promotes younger people to try. It puts younger people in a good light, showing they can do good things, as in today’s society teens are shown as trouble makers etc. Also I have included things like guitar tabs, so the audience can be more involved. It uses clean language with a mixture of simple and more complex writing styles. To appeal to most people.
My product would most likely be published by Emap, They publish other magazines like kerrang, Q, kiss fm etc which have similar audiences to those of my magazine. The magazine would probably be sold online, on a website, where you can subscribe (as seen on the contents page) or in supermarkets like Tesco where most magazines of a similar nature are sold. Also this is where most mothers will shop for their son and where most young adults will shop, so it is convenient. But also a lot of younger people use the internet, so online shopping is also convenient.
The main way in which I attracted my audience was through pictures, I used quite bright pictures to grab the audience’s attention. The front cover has quite bold writing and the masthead is quite bold. The magazine is aimed at a younger audience 16-25 so in my articles, pictures etc I used quite young people so the audience can relate to them. In my survey it showed that most people were attracted to the images, and they were the first thing they see. I also used words like 'free' 'exclusive' on the front cover so the audience would think they are getting more for their money and students in uni or school won't have that much money, so I’m appealing to them.
A lot of the designing, editing and constructing of this product was done on Photoshop, I have learnt a lot about it. I have learnt how to alter a photo to make it suit the genre and audience better. I also learned how to use BlogSpot to show all the work and use serveymonkey. I have learnt how to take different shots, and upload them as different file types so I can open them in different programs (e.g. Photoshop and adobe reader) I had a little bit of a problem using publisher but I overcame that by using other programs.

I think that I have learnt a lot about how magazines attract audience. I have also learnt some tools to help in editing photos and put them together on the page to make them look better. In my preliminary, I did not alter my photos. I have also learnt more about the layout of magazines. In my preliminary I didn't use very much text in my preliminary but there is a lot in normal magazines. I have also learnt how to use conventions and ideas from other magazines of the same genre and use them in my own magazine. I think I also used my time better in the real task than the preliminary, I planned my time better.
